This Bank Holiday Monday Guildford welcomed the Surrey County Show, a celebration of all the best agriculture, farming displays and livestock.

In addition to the displays, many stalls selling the finest Artisan crafts and food, as well as local produce were in abundance at the show.

The event was also filled with entertainment, including James Dylan’s Stunt World, an exciting motocross show, the Pilgrim Morris Men performing traditional dancing, and competitions for the best livestock and farming produce.

This year was the 62nd event, which is famed for hosting the country’s best traders and farmers, who have an opportunity to show off all their hard work from the year.

The show is run by the ‘Surrey County Agricultural Society’ and with support from the farming community and the people of Surrey found success in bringing people together and promoting the huge amount of talent and skill possessed by local farmers.

Despite the traditional element the event was kept fresh with the introduction of new companies and motorsports, creating a perfect balance of new and old and creating a perfect celebration of what Surrey has to offer.

The Executive approved grants of over £400,000 to local charitable, community and volunteer organisations in a recent meeting.

Guildford is home to many kind, helpful and charitable people that help out fellow residents; provide social and community groups to join; and offer ways to learn new skills and take part in activities through a great number of  local groups. The hardest part about keeping groups like these afloat is a matter of funding.

The Executive – Guildford Council’s governing body that makes decisions on a number of important issues – has recognised that these groups are clearly worth investing in, and has approved of a considerable grant to nurture these great causes.

Councillor Tony Rooth, Lead Councillor for Housing and Social Welfare, says: “The Council’s grant schemes help support organisations that improve the lives of local residents of all ages across the borough. Each application is thoroughly assessed to ensure projects meet the needs of our communities and we are pleased to be able to support so many worthwhile initiatives.”

Community grants of £123,000 will go to local charitable organisations. Guildford Borough Council fund these grants, which support projects that improve the lives of vulnerable people, promote health and wellbeing, reduce inequalities and improve access to training, skills and work opportunities.

Of the 17 organisations to receive a Community grant, 10 will receive a larger grant of over £5,000:

• CHIPS (for the Our World – My Future project)
• Crossroads Care (to provide core funding for care hours)
• Queen Elizabeth Park Community Centre (for ground floor development)
• Kane FM (for the Get Experience and Go Somewhere project)
• The Wey and Arun Canal Trust (at Shalford Canal Visitors Centre)
• Premier Tennis Community Interest Co Ltd (community tennis outreach programme)
• Albury Sports Club (for Albury Heath grounds development)
• Goldhawks Basketball (for Dunk the Junk project)
• Surrey Sharks Rugby League (for Guildford Area Rugby League Development Plan)
• Guildford Bike Project (Seed funding for shop manager).

Small grants under £5,000 will go to:

• Surrey Youth Focus
• Oakleaf Enterprise
• Voluntary Action South West Surrey
• Guildford Rowing Club
• Enpower Global TA Family Church (Guildford)
• The Pied Piper Theatre
• Synergy Dance Ltd.

The Executive also approved £290,950 funding, identified by the Voluntary Grants Panel, for voluntary services supporting adults in the community. This is a partnership between Guildford Borough Council and Surrey County Council Adult Social Care Team.

11 organisations will receive voluntary grants:

• Guildford Action (for day service and The GAF)
• Footsteps (for the drop in centre)
• Home Support Services Guildford (to help provide home support)
• Guildford CAB (for the mental health project and access to advice)
• Oakleaf Enterprise (to provide vocational training for adults experiencing mental illness)
• Ash CAB (to support an Independent Living Advisor)
• South West Surrey for Mental Health Ltd (for the Canterbury Care Centre)
• Cruse Bereavement Care (towards advice, guidance and support services)
• Surrey Welfare Rights Unit (to help provide specialist welfare benefits support)
• Outline (Outcrowd Social Inclusion project)
• Age Concern Shalford and Peasmarsh (Help for the Elderly).

For more information on community and voluntary grants, visit the benefits and grants page.

Are you a part of one of these great groups? If so then let us know as we would love to hear about your part in any one of these.

Loseley Park host their first teddy bears picnic on Sunday August 9 in behalf of Shooting Star Chase.

The event is being run in partnership with shooting star chase to raise funds for their children’s hospice care.

Activities include traditional fete games (pick-a-lolly, coin rolling and hook-a-duck), story-telling, face painting, garden treasure hunt, giant garden games and, of course, “the most original teddy bear competition” which will be judged by Guildford’s Deputy Mayor.

Shooting Star chase is a leading children’s hospice charity caring for babies, children and young people with life-limiting conditions and their families. It costs £9.5 million a year just to maintain their current level of care and it is your generosity that keeps them alive.

There will be children’s gifts and clothing for sale and all the proceeds will be going to charity. As such, you can splash out relatively guilt-free!

The main house will stay open for those who want to soak up a little history in the great Elizabethan Hall throughout the course of the day, so there is something for everyone to enjoy.

Families are welcome to bring their own picnic, but there will be freshly made pizzas from Caper & Berry’s mobile pizza oven as well as a Peroni and Pimms bar for the adults.

The family friendly event runs between 11am and 5pm.

We all know just how temperamental this British summer weather can be, so the park have even prepared an indoor wet-weather option – the beautiful tithe barn. As such, there will be no need for a last minute change of plans, whatever the weather!

Tickets: Adult £5, children go in free of charge.

This is not a ticketed event and there is no need to book in advance.

Loseley Park is situated on the B3000 New Pond road and the main entrance is in Stakescorner Road, signposted “Loseley House”.

Kelly’s Charity Riverside Run takes place in Guildford on Sunday 12 October and will be held along the banks of the beautiful River Wey. There will be a 5k walk and a 10k run, set in the little known Riverside Park, one of Guildford’s best hidden secrets; going through fields and meadows, testing the fittest and fastest of runners, whilst remaining safe for those less experienced with off road running.

Kelly’s Charity Events are run by the UK storage company specialists and are entirely paid for by the Kelly’s Family, with all money raised going to local charities. The first event they ever ran made £30,000 and so far the company has raised over £180,000 for charities local to its branches up and down the country. They are aiming to increase that by another £20,000 this year and the Riverside Run will surely contribute hugely to that.

This event, in its fifth year, supports Challengers, a local charity which provides play and leisure for disabled children and young people at a variety of schemes across Surrey, Hampshire and the surrounding areas. Challengers unique, non exclusion policy means that they will always find a way to support young people aged 2-25, no matter what their impairment.

Challengers offer a place to relax, make friends and challenge impairments through a variety of activities. Secondary to this, it gives parents and families a short break from what can be a constant cycle of care, knowing their loved ones are safe, having fun and receiving the support they require. Challengers rely heavily on donations and fundraising and over the past four years, Kelly’s Charity Events have raised over £100,000 for this wonderful charity.

Challengers

Mady Hatton of Challengers says, “We really can’t thank Kelly’s Charity Events enough. As a local charity we wouldn’t have the budget to put on an event this size for our supporters. But through the support of Kelly’s charity events, we have been able to reach a whole new group of supporters and in turn support more local disabled children and their families.”

David Martin, owner of Kelly’s Storage and his wife, Moira Martin who is a Director started these charity events five years ago to help make a difference in the community. David said, “We see Kelly’s Charity Events as an innovative model of how a business can grow profitably by helping their community and simultaneously creating a fun and inspirational workplace for their staff.”

Both Moira and David are passionate about their initiative, often taking it upon themselves to enter the runs, walks and cycle rides. For the last cycle challenge in Farnham, David completed the 45 mile hilly route on a heavy Barclays Boris bike without a bead of sweat. Dressed in a smart suit adorned with a re-enforced custom made bowler hat, he was a magnificent sight cycling the Surrey hills in high winds!

The run will be professionally organised and is designed to be family friendly, with a brilliant atmosphere guaranteed. Every penny raised, including registration money, goes directly to Challengers and with entertaining activities, refreshments and on-site parking, the event will be a great day out for all!
