Consultation begins on £9m transport improvement scheme

A six week consultation has begun on proposals to improve transport in Guildford Town Centre.

Several schemes being proposed including an experimental closure to traffic of Walnut Tree Close which serves Guildford station, a new bridge over the Wey, new cycle routes and a replacement for Walnut Bridge which connects Walnut Tree Close and Bedford Road.

The new wider bridge would encourage more cyclists to access the station by allowing them to cross without having to dismount. The council has already agreed to purchase some of the land required to facilitate the widening of the bridge.

Once the consultation period is over, a business case for the Guildford Town Centre Transport Package will submitted  in January.

Funding for the Transport Package will come from three sources. Government funds will provide £6.55m with the remainder coming from Guildford and Surrey County Councils.

Any schemes proposed will also have to be considered alongside the Town Centre Masterplan which is being developed by Guildford Council and also the Guildford Local Cycling Strategy.

Following the consultation, a report will be go before the Guildford local committee at the beginning of December with the business case submitted on January 31.

Members of the public will be able to view the plans at three exhibitions held between 10am and 5.30pm on October 16, October 23 and November 6 at Guildford Library in North Street.
