Guildford Lightning Women’s Ice Hockey Team

Guildford Lightning are a women’s ice hockey team who play their home games at Guildford’s Spectrum Leisure Centre, just like their male counterparts, the Guildford Flames. The Lightning competes at the top level in the country; Women’s Premier League which is the league above the Division One and a smaller Under 16s Women’s League. The team exists within the Guildford Flames Junior Ice Hockey Club, which also has teams at U10’s (Firestreakes), U12’s (Fireflies), U14’s (Firestorm), U16’s (Firestars) and U18’s (Phoenix). The Lightning finished third last season, eight points behind eventual winners Bracknell Queen Bees.

Women’s Ice Hockey in Great Britain is administered by the English and Scottish Ice Hockey Associations and has proven to be one of the fastest growing areas of the game. The British Women’s Leagues (BWL) were formed with five teams in 1984 and the founding members of the league were; the Brighton Amazons, Cambridge University, Oxford University, Peterborough Ravens and the Solihull Vixens. This season there will be seven other teams battling it out for the title as well as the Guildford Lightning, and they are the Sheffield Shadows, Kingston Diamonds, Slough Phantoms, Solihull Vixens, Streatham Storm, Bracknell Queen Bees and MK Falcons
