The cycling great Chris Froome, will join the race at the Prudential Ride London this weekend. The three time ‘Tour de France’ winner has been confirmed by race organisers, to be joining the iconic race, in order to prepare for this years Olympics.

After winning the ‘Tour de France’ last weekend, you would have thought Froome would be taking it easy, however with the Olympics just a few weeks away, Froome wants all the cycling action he can get.

The British fans will see our Olympic hopeful tear down the course in Surrey and south London and it will be a challenge for the other riders to see if they can keep up. The 200km course will see Froome and his team at Sky, fly through Kingston town and over Hampton Court Bridge, into Surrey going through the capital and later finishing at Westminster.

There will be plenty of people out on the streets to watch Froome and the other riders, so be cautious of any disturbances to the roads, such as traffic and closures.

On Sunday July 31 the Prudential RideLondon Surrey  100 and Prudential RideLondon Classic returns to the roads of Surrey, following much of the route used during the 2012 Olympics and causing road closures.

Thousands of amateur cyclists will pass through the town in the Surrey 100 as they head back to Central London after conquering the hills and lanes of Surrey.

Following the Surrey 100, 150 of the world’s best cyclists will be racing along the route. No details of this year’s participants have been released but last year Bradley Wiggins and Mark Cavendish (pictured) took part.

As a result of the race, significant road closures, diversions and parking restrictions for most of the day.

Marshals will reopen roads once it is safe and secure to do so.

The route through Surrey see the cyclist cross Hampton Court Bridge, through Walton and Weybridge, Ripley, West Horsley, East Clandon and through to Leith Hill before doing circuits of Box Hill and then heading back up via Leatherhead and Oxshott before heading back to London via Esher and Thames Ditton.

Roads in the Byfleet area will close at 5am and re-open around 12pm with the first amateur cyclists expected around 7am.

Rolling road closures will take place when the professional race comes through the area around 2pm.

In the Box Hill area, roads will close around 7.30am and re-open around 7pm with the first amateur cyclists expected around 8.35am. The professional cyclists are expected between 3.30pm and 5pm.

Guildford based netball team Surrey Storm retained their superleague title after narrowly beating season champions Manchester Thunder on Saturday.

Surrey Storm had won their place in the final after finishing 2nd in the Superleague which saw Storm, Hertfordshire Mavericks and Team Bath level on points but Storm take second place on goal average.

Both sides were evenly matched with each side having one narrow win with each other during the league season.

The Superleage Final was tight with Storm edging out Thunder with a 55-53 victory at the Copperbox Arena on the Olympic Park. Storm had a strong first half with a 32-19 lead at half-time.

Manchester Thunder rallied after the break and brought the match to a nailbiting conclusion but did not have enough to overtake Surrey Storm by the final whistle.

Surrey Storm is the first team to win back to back titles since 2010.

Guildford Council are offering many free taster sports sessions until January 24 as part of their Active Guildford initiative.

As well as some of the more regular sports such as badminton, netball, volleyball and swimming, there are free taster sessions for other sports such as walking basketball, rush hockey, ultimate frisbee, cardio tennis and squash step. After the initial two week free trial sessions, members of the public can continue to participate in their chosen sport(s) by either taking part in regular sessions or joining a club.

Active Guildford marks the beginning of Guildford Council’s five year sport development strategy to encourage more people across the borough to enjoy the benefits of regular exercise.

Last year, Guildford Council asked local people what they thought would increase take-up of sports and exercise, 96% said access to cheaper sports sessions, 92% said improved awareness of opportunities and 89% said sessions held in their local area. In response to the Active Guildford campaign was started in partnership with local leisure providers and clubs to get local people’s health and wellbeing for the new year off to a good start.

According to Sport England’s national statistics, 43% of our community meet the national measurement of at least 30 minutes of physical exercise per week. Although this is higher than Surrey’s average of 42%, we want to address the statistics that say 22% of Guildford borough’s adults are inactive and only 20% of over 55’s and 19% of disabled people in Surrey are participating in regular sport. It is also a concern that females and those from black and minority ethnic groups are participating less than men and white residents respectively.

Lead Councillor for Community Health and Sport, Cllr Iseult Roche, says: “We want to encourage sport participation for all age groups and target those who are participating less than the general population. Our dedicated Active Guildford strategy working group will develop action plans over the next five years to improve availability and take-up of sports by all in the area. The free taster sessions in January will show how sport can be social, inexpensive and fun. There will be plenty of beginner sessions on offer and we encourage people to give them a go.”

Active Guildford is part of a five year strategy, which has priorities linked to key themes: encourage the community to get active and stay active, encourage those from underrepresented groups to get active, support the development of sports coaches and volunteers and maximise the use of local places for sport and active leisure.

The Italian Rugby Union team arrived at Surrey Sports Park on Monday for their first training session ahead of the start of Rugby World Cup 2015.

Stars including vice-captain Leonardo GhiraldiniMartin Castrogiovanni and Mauro Bergamasco, trained as part of an open training session, with local residents and rugby fans in attendance.

Italy are training at Surrey Sports Park until Wednesday 23 September as they prepare for their Rugby World Cup 2015 Pool D fixtures against France and Canada.

The team have been making use of the Park’s dedicated RWC 2015 grass pitch, 50m swimming pool and new £500,000 Health and Fitness Centre.

The squad were officially welcomed to the tournament on Monday evening at Hampton Court Palace, where the players and coaches received their tournament caps and participation medals.

Speaking at the ceremony, Surrey Sports Park Chief Executive, Karen Rothery, said, “It is with great honour that I welcome both players and staff from the Italian National Rugby team to Surrey Sports Park, the University of Surrey and the community of Surrey.

“We are extremely proud and excited to host the Azzurri during the upcoming weeks, for what promises to be a memorable Rugby World Cup 2015.

“I am sure your visit and time in the county will help to inspire the young people of Surrey to both embrace the competition and sport of rugby, planting the seeds for potential Rugby World Cup stars of the future.”

Surrey Sports Park will host Ireland later this month as a RWC 2015 Team Base and has been selected as a training venue for the knockout stages of the tournament.

The Park will also be showing all Rugby World Cup games live in the Bench Sports Bar.

Guildford Council wants local residents and sports facility users to tell them what they think about the first draft of their Guildford Sport Development Strategy 2015 -2020 in an online survey.

In the draft strategy there are three main priorities to:
• target those who are less active through informal sport
• encourage those who are already participating to increase the regularity of their sporting habit
• improve the quality of our clubs, coaches and volunteers.

Councillor Iseult Roche, Lead Councillor for Community Health and Sport, said: “Promoting sport and the importance of leading an active life is important for both physical and emotional good health. Participation in sport brings valuable health and lifestyle benefits to all our community.  Surrey is the third most active county in England, however I believe we could achieve more in our borough and ensuring participation among all residents regardless of age or ability is very important.

“This strategy, in partnership with local organisations, will help those who are less active and improve the health of our community through sport. We also intend to support our clubs, coaches, volunteers and local athletes with help from key partners. I encourage residents and local sports facility users to participate in our online survey and help shape our final strategy.”

This strategy aims to raise the profile of sport across the borough during the next five years, to improve the health of our community, widen access to quality sports provision and support our clubs, coaches and local athletes.

The survey asks your thoughts about the sports provision in Guildford and what would make you re-engage or increase your current participation in sporting activity.

The survey – guildford.gov.uk/healthandwellbeing –  takes less than five minutes to complete and there is a chance to win a month’s free membership to Guildford Spectrum worth up to £50.

The survey closes on August 21 2015.

Sports England has received a £1.72 million funding pot, which will be shared by eight projects around Greater London to improve sporting facilities and playing fields.

The funding will help those eight schemes to either breathe new life into tired facilities, make them more efficient and sustainable, or improve existing and unused sites so that they offer better sporting experiences for people.

This new funding will go towards refurbishing Dorking Football Ground in Meadowbank which will provide a new full size floodlit 3G AGP, changing facilities, spectators stand and terracing, clubhouse, public toilets and parking to the football ground.

Sport England has been raising funds since 1994 and has invested over 5 billion pounds in grassroots sports over the past twenty years. Sport England is focused on helping people and communities across the country to create a sporting habit for life and will invest over £1 billion of National Lottery and Exchequer funding between 2012 and 2017 in organisations and projects that will:

  • Help more people have a sporting habit for life
  • Create more opportunities for young people to play sport
  • Nurture and develop talent
  • Provide the right facilities in the right places
  • Support local authorities and unlock local funding
  • Ensure real opportunities for communities

Sport England’s Property Director, Charles Johnston, said: “£5 billion is a huge sum of money, but it’s the projects and people that money supports which are really important. We’re delighted to have invested so much into community sport, and see on a daily basis the impact that it makes for local people.

“The latest round of facility funding continues to make a noticeable difference to community sports clubs across the country. By giving people top-class, sustainable facilities in which to play sport, and by improving and protecting our playing surfaces, we’re ensuring that more people can pay sport, more often.”

149 projects across England have been awarded new funding today, totalling £16.5 million of National Lottery money and a complete list of the funded projects is available here: https://sportengland.sharefile.com/d-s68ba6f27b3a4876b
