The Weekend Guide (05-07.09.14)


Each week we provide a comprehensive guide to all that is going on and The Weekend Guide this week covers the Friday evening of September 5 through to Sunday 7 September. We will endeavour to provide you with all the local information for each weekend, whether it is going for a drink, listening to some live music, going to the theatre, watching our local sports teams or anything else Guildford has to offer. Friday Night (05.09.14)
Beer Festival, 6.30pm, G Live, £12. Head down and enjoy ales and ciders from some of the country’s top independent brewers as well as live music, a hog roast and a BBQ. All of the BBQ meat will be provided by ‘The Joint’- Guildford’s newest independent butcher. Live music for Friday night includes The Nefarious Picaroons and Blue Coyote.
Kick Back Comedy, 8pm, The Boileroom, £12. Kick Back Comedy books the best comedians on the comedy circuit in London and around the UK and brings top class stand-up comedy shows to Guildford. All comedians are professional comics that have worked at all the major comedy clubs; as well as on TV, catering for all types of comedy.
Lotty’s War, 8pm, The Yvonne Arnaud Theatre, tickets from £24.50. A mesmerising story of passion, courage and sacrifice, Lotty’s War is a thriller set in WWII enemy occupied Channel Islands. Based on unpublished diaries found in Guernsey, this critically acclaimed play comes to the stage in its first major UK tour.
Doubt, 8pm, The Mill Studio, £13. Set in a Catholic School in the Bronx, New York in 1964, Doubt is by turns humorous, dramatic and thought provoking. It won the Tony Award for Best Play and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Presented by Triple C Theatre Company.
Tom Rotherham, 8.30pm, Bar des Arts, free entry. Tom Rotherham is a local classical and Spanish guitarist. His repertoire includes the most popular pieces from the genres and some arrangements of popular music, including The Beatles, Queen, Led Zeplin, and more, whilst also throwing in songs such as ‘Classical Gas’ by Mason Williams, ‘Cavatina’ by Stanley Myers (which features in The Deer Hunter) and ‘Pachelbel’s Canon’.
Jack Daniel’s Birthday, 10pm, Casino Nightclub, £3 before midnight, £5 after. There will be a big Jack Daniel’s birthday celebration at Casino this Saturday and why not try one of their special edition Jack Daniel’s themed cocktails. Choose from either Tennessee Peach, Velvet Elvis or alternatively you can keep things simple with a shot of chilled Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Honey.

Saturday (06.09.14)
Richmond Dog Show: Day 2, 9am onwards, Loseley Park, free entry but £5 for guest dogs. Richmond Dog Show Society has been hosting an annual championship held under Kennel Club Rules and Regulations since 1895. The Richmond Championship Show is one of the oldest established and best known dog shows in the UK calendar with entries received from all over Europe. More than 150 breeds can be seen over the course of each show and the top awards are keenly contested.
Guildford Records & CDs Fair, 10am, Guildford Guildhall, free entry. Local independent music shop, Ben’s Collectors Records brings its record and CD fair to the Guildhall this Saturday for the ninth time this year. Be sure to stop by to browse some retro classics and pick up a bargain!
Faces of Compton, 10.30am-5.15pm, Watts Gallery, free entry. A new exhibition called Faces of Compton by Emma-Leone Palmer opens this Saturday featuring captivating portraits of the local residents from the village of Compton. See our full preview HERE.
Hey, Presto! 11am & 2pm, The Mill Studio, £9. A heart-warming tale of friendship, adventure and a little bit of mischief, based on the book by Nadia Shireen. Most suitable for ages 3 years plus, running time- approximately 60mins.

Guildford City FC v Chertsey Town, 3pm, Guildford Spectrum, £8 Adults, £4 Children. Guildford City host local rivals Chertsey Town on ‘non-league day’ at the Spectrum on Saturday. Firstly Guildford City will be unveiling the brand new home kit for the 2014-15 season, complete with their charity partners logo (halow project) on the back of the shirt. Local dignitaries including the Mayor of Guildford, a number of the youth team members, guests, clients and trustees of the halow project should be in attendance.
Woking FC v Lincoln City, 3pm, Kingfield Stadium, Adult £15, U16s £3. Garry Hill is hoping for a big crowd on Saturday on Non-League Day – and his side certainly deserve great support after another terrific performance at Wrexham that included two top-class goals. The result meant they soared into fourth place in the table, following on from the 6-1 thrashing of Dover Athletic in their last home game.
Farnborough FC v Havant & Waterlooville, 3pm, Paddy Power Park, Adults £12, U16s free. Fifteenth placed Farnborough take on seventeenth placed Havant & Waterlooville this Saturday in a crucial clash in the bottom half of the division. Farnborough have only got seven points from six games, but the good news is, they have all come in the last three games after going WWD.

Sunday (07.09.14)

Shere Hill Climb, 9am-5pm, Staple Lane (Clandon), £8 Adults. A chance to see an amazing selection of rare and interesting cars in action on a closed road. You’ll find a mix of cars from the earliest days of motoring right up to some modern exotic super cars. There’s also a large number of interesting displays and activities to entertain the whole family.
The Zeppelin Walk, 10am, Shalford Station, no cost. This nine mile walk will include the River Wey, Peasmarsh and a lunch stop at the Grantley Arms in Wonersh or a picnic nearby.
Guildford Flames v Basingstoke Bison, 6pm, Guildford Spectrum, Adults £10.50, KIDS GO FREE! The sights, sounds and tastes of match day are back on Sunday when Basingstoke visit Spectrum for a 6pm ‘Kids Go Free’ faceoff. The Flames line up will look a little different this season without Milos Melicherik and Stuart Potts- both players had 10+ years’ service with the club, but will now focus on coaching roles in 2014-2015.
