The Weekend Guide (12-14.09.14)


Each week we provide a comprehensive guide to all that is going on and The Weekend Guide this week covers the Friday evening of September 12 through to Sunday 14 September. We will endeavour to provide you with all the local information for each weekend, whether it is going for a drink, listening to some live music, going to the theatre, watching our local sports teams or anything else Guildford has to offer. Friday Night (12.09.14)
Paul Provost – Organ, 7.30pm, Guildford United Reformed Church, £8. The Guildford United Reformed Church Music Society was formed in 1992 to present live music of a high standard and to make it more widely available. Besides engaging well-established artists, they take much pleasure in encouraging the many talented young musicians of today, wishing to foster the love of, and the interest in, music among children.
Lotty’s War, 8pm, The Yvonne Arnaud Theatre, tickets from £24.50. A mesmerising story of passion, courage and sacrifice, Lotty’s War is a thriller set in WWII enemy occupied Channel Islands. Based on unpublished diaries found in Guernsey, this critically acclaimed play comes to the stage in its first major UK tour.
Warnings to the Curious, 8pm, The Mill Studio, £13. Warnings to the Curious: The Ghost Stories of M. R. James is an original one-man stage show based of some of the Edwardian era’s greatest ghost stories. Atmospheric with flashes of macabre humour, this play is guaranteed to raise the gooseflesh and to make audiences fear that perhaps there are such things as ghosts after all.
Chris Jenkins, 8.30pm, Bar des Arts, free entry. Why not come along and be entertained by troubadour Chris Jenkins who will be playing classic songs this Friday. Gorgeous Chris will be impressing the audience with his repertoire of songs and stunning voice.

Saturday (13.0.14)
Guildford Heritage Open Days, all day, all over the borough, free of charge. A host of exciting activities are on offer around the borough at this year’s Heritage Open Days from 11 to 14 September. Historical re-enactments and vintage vehicles are just some of the highlights of this year’s packed programme, with 57 buildings and 36 churches opening their doors for free. Theo The Mouse Show, 11am & 2pm, The Mill Studio, £9. Theo The Mouse and his best friend Wendy are coming for a day of pure family fun and laughter. The show is filled with jokes, songs and magic and will be suitable for any little person over two years of age. Written by Wink Taylor, families are in for a treat – the wonderfully loveable and just so slightly cheeky Theo The Mouse will soon become every child’s favourite friend.
Vocal Recital, 1pm, St Nicholas’ Church, free entry. Short Vocal Recital given by James Wilder starting at 1pm on Saturday 13 September at the beautiful St Nicolas’ Church, Bury Street. Free entry and a retiring collection for the Church Army. Refreshments are also available after the recital.

Farnborough FC v Bromley, 3pm, Paddy Power Park, Adults £12, U16s free. Farnborough currently sit thirteenth in the Vanarama Conference South with 10 points after eight games and will be playing third placed Bromley this Saturday. The high flying away team have only lost two of their opening eight, so it should be a tough match up.
Woking FC v Chester, 3pm, Kingfield Stadium, Adult £15, U16s £3. Unbeaten Woking take on nineteenth placed strugglers Chester at the Kingfield Stadium this Saturday. The Cardinals are currently in third place, having taken 18 points out of a possible 24 so far, so will be hoping for another win to potentially go top of the table!
Comedy Club 4 Kids, 3pm, G Live, £10. The Comedy Club 4 Kids give you cracking entertainment for everyone over six years old and under 400 years old (no vampires or Highlanders). It has all the best comedians from the UK and world circuit doing what they do best… but without the rude bits!
The 24hr Musical, 7.30pm, The Electric Theatre, £10. Join the slightly mad and sleep-deprived cast who have stayed awake and been rehearsing a fully staged musical for 24 hours straight. What will it be? You’ll just have to come and find out! Guaranteed to be a fantastic evening of musical theatre, presented by Fasten Your Seatbelts in association with The Electric Theatre.
It’s A Kind Of Magic, 7.30pm, G Live, £22.50. Enjoy an evening of fun, song and dance with the definitive Queen tribute act, Rhapsody with their show entitled ‘It’s A Kind of Magic’ after the twelfth album released by Queen. Is this the real Queen? Maybe not, but it’s about as close as you’re going to get!
Talbot House A Home From Home, 8pm, The Mill Studio, £13. During the Great War, Talbot House in Poperinge, Belgium, a few short miles behind the front line, became a haven for thousands of allied troops – a ‘home from home’ where they enjoyed some home comforts and remembered the men that they really were. This play recreates the humour, music and wonderful atmosphere of this inspirational house.
Joe Waller, 8.30pm, Bar des Arts, free entry. Joe is a young singer songwriter from the South of England and is currently recording his first EP. Joe’s influences include a mix of pop, folk and R&B artists and this shows through his blend of personal lyrics and raw acoustic music.

Sunday (14.09.14)

Shamley Green Walk, 10am, The Red Lion, no cost. This 9.5 mile walk with Guildford Rambling Club will go from Shamley Green to Winkworth Arboretum. The walk includes a picnic lunch at the Arboretum or you could use the café and they advise that if you have an National Trust membership card to bring it with you, but this is not essential.
Strassenbahnhaltestelle Clarinet Quartet, 2pm, Guildford Castle Bandstand, no cost. Music lovers young and old can enjoy free live music this summer, thanks to a series of bandstand concerts in the Castle Grounds. The week sees the Strassenbahnhaltestelle Clarinet Quartet play music from the past 500 years, written and arranged for clarinets of various sizes.
Stitch n Bitch, 2pm, The Boileroom, free entry. A super-friendly, monthly afternoon making stuff in Guildford’s arty-ist and alternative venue. Suitable for ‘crafty sew-and-sews’ AND absolute beginners. Bring your own activity, or join in with one that is already running.
Guildford Flames v Milton Keynes Lightning, 6pm, Guildford Spectrum, Adults £9.50, KIDS GO FREE! The Flames will be facing off against old rival MK Lightning in the Sunday game this week in the first League Cup game of the season. Make sure you head down to support the Flames as their new season commences and remember that kids go free!
