The Weekend Guide (21-23.11.14)


Each week we provide a comprehensive guide to all that is going on and The Weekend Guide this week covers the Friday evening of November 21 through to Sunday 23. We will endeavour to provide you with all the local information for each weekend, whether it is going for a drink, listening to some live music, going to the theatre, watching our local sports teams or anything else Guildford has to offer. Friday Night (21.11.14)
Guildford College Group Graduation and Award Ceremony, 7pm, G Live, £10. Each year the College Group comprising of Guildford College, Merrist Wood College and Farnham Sixth Form College invites award winning students, graduating students from its higher education programmes and professional qualifications to a prestigious Graduation and Awards Ceremony. The event is a celebration of the students’ achievements and provides an opportunity for families and friends to share in their success.
Abstract Art Exhibition, 7pm, Bar des Arts, no cost. Art lovers from Guildford can attend the launch of a new exhibition at Bar des Arts on Friday from 7pm as Abstract artist Daniel Diaz will be showcasing his paintings at the bar. See the full preview HERE.
The Hard Ground, 7.30pm, The Boileroom, £5. The band’s signature sound relies heavily on the interplay between the two contrasting main vocals which provide the foundation for what is musically brooding and brash, sassy and sentimental, where the gravel meets the glass. Alternating between contrasting styles, sometimes raw, sometimes layered, the five piece always pack an emotional punch. Supported by Beautiful Boy, Fire At Night, Lone Poets.
Oboe Virtuoso, 7.30pm, Holy Trinity Church, £20. Nicolas Daniel achieved early fame as one of the most popular winners of the BBC Young Musician of the Year and his virtuoso oboe playing has since been acclaimed internationally. He returns to Guildford with a sparkling programme of expressive beauty, including works by Bach and Strauss framed with symphonies by Mozart and Haydn.
Christmas Floral Curiosity, 7.30pm, The Mill Studio, £13. Multi award winning floral designer Mig Kimpton brings a fun, festive flare to all things creative, informative and factual. Join him as he conjures up floral designs from history, explains the myths behind our Christmas traditions and as always shares his personal funny stories and tales.
La Boheme, 7.30pm, The Electric Theatre, Adults £24, U18s £12. In the vibrant Latin quarter of 19th century Paris, an impoverished student, Rodolfo, and a frail seamstress, Mimi, embark on a love affair with tragic consequences. Containing some of Puccini’s best-loved music, the pathos of the story is offset by scenes of youthful high jinks and exuberant street life. Fully staged opera in 4 Acts sung in English and performed by talented soloists with Guildford Opera chorus and orchestra.
Peter Pan Goes Wrong, 8pm, The Yvonne Arnaud Theatre, tickets from £24.50. Mischief Theatre are bringing their second hilarious ‘Goes Wrong’ play to Guildford after recently winning the Whatsonstage Award for Best New Comedy 2014 with The Play That Goes Wrong. See our full preview HERE.
Amy Matthews & Tim Steadman, 8.30pm, Bar des Arts, free entry. Acoustic Duo Amy & Tim will entertain us with a range of songs from Michael Jackson to Avicii. Amy’s musical theatre roots have led her talent to be recognised by MTV amongst others. Ex ACMer Tim’s love of guitar complements Amy’s voice perfectly.

Saturday (22.11.14)
Christmas Winter Woodland, 10am, Alice Holts, £22 a child, adults go free. A magical Christmas event for children in the heart of Alice Holt Forest, Farnham. Meet Father Christmas and feed his reindeer carrots as well as partaking in a fun drama workshop with the elves in their very own toy factory! Every child takes home a special present from Father Christmas.
Guildford Gift Show, 10am, Guildford Spectrum, Adults £3.50, U12s free. The Guildford Gift Show brings you 90 individual stall holders in the warmth and comfort of a heated arena within the Spectrum away from the cold and hustle of the high street. Everything you could possibly imagine for your Christmas needs from art to cosmetics, handmade luxury items to pamper treatments, children’s toys to bespoke jewellery, to suit a range of tastes and budgets.
Winter Market & Fair, 11am, Guildford Cathedral, Adults £1, U16s free. The Winter Fair returns to Guildford Cathedral for a wonderful early Christmas shopping experience with over 60 exhibitors selling bespoke Christmas gifts and decorations, chocolates, wines, jewellery and much, much more! The Cathedral Shop will also be open, stocked with wonderful items for Christmas.
Cinder-ella, 11am & 2.30pm, The Mill Studio, £9. Full of imaginative silliness with inventive puppetry, sign language, tunes from Rossini’s opera and even an aria. Most suitable for ages 3-8 years with a running time of approximately 50 minutes.
Meridian Brass at the Movies, 2pm, G Live Bellerby Studio, £10. Come and join award-winning quartet, Meridian Brass, for some of the best-loved themes from the big screen, performed up close in G Live’s intimate Bellerby Studio. From Star Wars to James Bond, be prepared to embark on an exciting journey of film music, as experienced through the eyes of a live professional brass quartet.
Afternoon Music Recital, 2.30pm, St Nicholas’ Church, no cost. Short cello recital by Sam Humphreys at the beautiful St Nicolas’ Church, Bury Street. Free entry and a retiring collection for Guildford Action. Refreshments are also available after the recital.

Woking FC v Barnet, 3pm, Kingfield Stadium, Adult £15, U16s £3. The Cards, in third place and with two games in hand, take on league leaders, Barnet, eight points clear of the Cards’ next opponents, second-placed Grimsby Town, so all’s set for what should be Kingfield’s biggest gate of the season so far. There have been some terrific games between the two clubs over the years and both of the present sides like to play attractive, attacking football. Don’t miss this one!
Farnborough FC v Hayes & Yeading United, 3pm, Paddy Power Park, Adults £12, U16s £3. Three points on Monday evening have put plenty of confidence into Spencer Day’s Farnborough side going into Saturday’s home clash with 10th place Hayes & Yeading United. Farnborough head into Saturday’s game still in 17th place but now with 16 points and three points this weekend could see them rise one place to 16th.
Aldershot Town FC v Eastleigh, 3pm, Electrical Services Stadium, Adult seating/standing £19/17, Juniors seating standing £7/£5. After the euphoria of Wednesday night’s FA Cup First Round replay win over Portsmouth, Aldershot Town can now look forward to a home tie in the Second Round against Rochdale on 7 December. However, before then, the Shots have three league games, starting with the visit of Eastleigh this weekend. BBC Surrey’s Gavin Denison previews the action.

Guildford Flames v Manchester Phoenix, 6pm, Guildford Spectrum, Adults £10.50, Children £6.50. Last weekend the Flames went down 5-3 to Manchester on the road, but this Saturday they have a chance for immediate retribution. The Phoenix are lying seventh in the league despite picking up the points last time out, so fourth placed Guildford will be confident of getting the W on home ice.

Paul Carrack, 7pm, G Live, tickets from £29.50. Legendary Sheffield-born singer, songwriter and former frontman of Ace, Squeeze and Mike & The Mechanics returns to the road following his widely acclaimed recent album release Rain or Shine, a mix of new original songs and classic tracks. Recently dubbed by the BBC as ‘The Man with the Golden Voice’, Paul is a key figure in British pop history, an all-rounded musical talent.
Quatre Femmes Records Present: Love Buzzard, 7.30pm, The Boileroom, £5. Love Buzzard are a provocative, super-charged garage rock duo with raw, bourbon-soaked vocals asserting infectiously filthy lyrics alongside feverish, Cuban-heel-stomping drums. They are lusty predators with bluesy riffs, rock and roll glam debauchery, indulging in exuberant liberation while strutting a sophisticated tongue-thrust- into-cheek finesse. Supported by CeCe, Son Joan, DJs.
Mozart: Drama Personified, 7.30pm, Clandon Park, £12. Join Les Bougies Baroques on a journey that showcases Mozart’s dramatic flair – a journey which chronologically starts from his 1778 Paris Symphony and 1784 G major Keyboard Concerto (K.453) and ends with excerpts from his much-loved later operas including Le Nozze di Figaro, Don Giovanni, Cosi fan Tutte and Die Zauberflõte.
Mark Millington, 8.30pm, Bar des Arts, free entry. Saxophonist Mark Millington has been on a musical odyssey since 1975. He has performed at Ronnie Scott’s a number of times supporting such Jazz greats as Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers and Chet Baker and toured and recorded with Hugh Masekela.

Sunday (23.11.14)

Barrance Whitfield & The Savages, 7pm, The Boileroom, £12.50. Barrence Whitfield & the Savages shot out of Boston in the mid-‘80s with the force of a cannonball. Through their sweaty dance party shows and love of primal soul, they were to R&B what the Cramps were to rockabilly–a gateway musical drug for nascent underground roots mavens. Supported by: The Venus Lyx and Fauntleroy.
The Electric Comedy Club, 7.45pm, The Electric Theatre, £9 on door. Make your weekend feel much longer with a Sunday night of great comedy with The Electric Comedy Club that takes place in the Cafe Bar – cabaret style. The bar is open all night and there are five great acts, this month featuring: Matt Price, Iszi Lawrence, Archie Maddocks, Tim O’Connor and Ben Briggs.
