The Halloween Weekend Guide


Each week we provide a comprehensive guide to all that is going on and this week covers Halloween. We will endeavour to provide you with all the local information for each weekend, whether it is going for a drink, listening to some live music, going to the theatre, watching our local sports teams or anything else Guildford has to offer. Friday Night, Halloween (31.10.14)
The Canterbury Tales, 7.30pm, St Mary’s Church, £12. A flagon-filled feast of fun, brimmed full with chivalric romance, beautiful maidens, swindling merchants, bawdy wives and flatulent monks. Live music, puppetry and enchanting story-telling combine in brand new stage production devised and written by Guildford Shakespeare Company. Read our full review HERE.
The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown + Bob Log III, 7.30pm, The Boileroom, £11. Arthur is best thought of for his 1968 Number one single Fire that still gets regular airplay all over the world and has been covered by the likes of Ozzy Osbourne, Die Krupps, The Prodigy and The Who. Arthur’s next band Kingdom Come performed as the main act at the first filmed Glastonbury Festival in 1971 and in 1973 Kingdome Come was the first band to release an album using a Drum Machine.
Popular Music Keyboard Concert, 7.30pm, Shalford Village Hall, no cost. Michael McAneny – Organist/Keyboard artiste in concert; a two hour concert featuring all types and styles of popular music, with an interval. Promoted by West Surrey Organ and Keyboard Club.
The Ghost Tour of Guildford, 8pm, Holy Trinity Church, Adults £5, Children £3. The Ghost Tour of Guildford has been amusing, informing and repulsing the public for over a decade. Surrey’s premier spooky attraction can boast it has never knowingly given anyone their money back! Discover a side of Guildford you never knew you wanted to know. It’s a truly horrible way to spend an evening.
Pitcairn, 8pm, The Yvonne Arnaud Theatre, £22.50. After overthrowing Captain Bligh, Fletcher Christian drops anchor at the remote island of Pitcairn in the southern Pacific, so to establish a society of equals with his fellow sailors and their Tahitian followers. But the settlers are loathe to relinquish their privileges and vices, and the Tahitians dream of home.
Around The World in 80 Days, 8pm, The Mill Studio, £13. A joyfully frenetic whirlwind of a show, full of daft Victorian invention, daring deeds and downright silliness. Three actors portray a cast of thousands in this madcap adaptation of Verne’s globetrotting classic, bringing to life sea storms, police chases and even elephant rides!
Knightmare Live, 8pm, G Live, £17. Knightmare Live returns with more adventure, characters, puzzles and monsters in this critically acclaimed stage adaption of the cult TV classic. Each day one member of the public will be guided by two guest comedians through Treguard’s dungeon but will they succeed in their quest, or fall foul to one of Lord Fear’s schemes?
Halloween Foam Party, 8.30pm, Guildford Spectrum, £4.50 in adv, £6 on the door. Spectrum are excited to host their first ever Foam Party on Ice this Halloween! The resident DJ will be playing all the latest tunes, plus all your spooky requests and there will also be competitions, prizes and giveaways! Expect to get wet… foam will be blasted into the ice rink at regular intervals throughout the evening so we recommend you wear clothes that won’t ruin when wet and bring something to change into afterwards.

Saturday (01.11.14)
Guildford Record Fair, 9am, Guildford Guildhall, free entry. The Guildford Record Fair is a regular event that has been running for six years and is continuing to grow in popularity. It is somewhere that record sellers in the surrounding area can meet up and bring their vinyl wares to the bustling town of Guildford and with 20 stalls full of records, you are sure to find something.
The Big Draw, 10am, Guildford Institute, no cost. ‘The dwelling in the woods’ – working with artist Janine Creaye, create wire sculpted drawings suspended in the window of the Studio at the Guildford Institute. A different imagined world of line and light in wire, taking inspiration from sketches of the home, flowers and fruits grown, animals kept, wild animals and types of trees.
The Magic Word, 11am & 2pm, The Electric Theatre, £6.50. Following their sell out shows last year, Let’s All Dance returns with another gorgeous, classical ballet. Once again, children will be enchanted by the magical dancers, stunning costumes and crystal clear story-telling. With themes of kindness, good manners and friendship, this is a heart-warming tale for all ages.
Comedy Club 4 Kids Workshop, 11.30am, G Live Bellerby Studio, course fee £20. Learn stand-up, pick up a microphone and feel confident in front of an audience. During this fun session professional comics from Comedy Club 4 Kids will show participants how to write and perform comedy before the big show at 3pm.

Comedy Club 4 Kids, 3pm, G Live Bellerby Studio, £10. The Comedy Club 4 Kids gives cracking entertainment for everyone over six years old and under 400 years old (no vampires or Highlanders). It has all the best comedians from the UK and world circuit doing what they do best… but without the rude bits!
Farnborough FC v Gosport Borough, 3pm, Paddy Power Park, Adults £12, U16s £3. This Saturday it’s the battle of the Borough’s as Farnborough welcome Gosport Borough to Paddy Power Park in the Vanarama Conference South after a two week long break. Farnborough head into Saturday’s game with Gosport Borough in 17th place with 13 points and three points could see them rise one place to 16th.
Aldershot Town FC v Gateshead, 3pm, Electrical Services Stadium, Adult seating/standing £19/17, Juniors seating standing £7/£5. Aldershot Town had a successful break from league action last weekend with a 2-0 home FA Cup victory over Torquay United, a win which took them to a much-anticipated First Round tie against League Two side Portsmouth. However, the more immediate focus will be on the league visit of high-flyers Gateshead this weekend.
Bonfire and Fireworks, 6pm, Bramley Field, donations. The Bramley Bonfire is always a spectacular event with a torch lit parade from 6.40pm, a raging bonfire from 7.10pm and magical fireworks from 7.45pm.
Kick Back Comedy, 7pm, The Boileroom, £12. Kick Back Comedy books the best comedians on the comedy circuit in London and around the UK and brings top class stand-up comedy shows to Guildford. All comedians are professional comics that have worked at all the major comedy clubs; as well as on TV, catering for all types of comedy. This month featuring: Ria Lina + Quincy + Sol Bernstein + Debra Jane Appleby (MC).

The Occam Singers, 7.30pm, Holy Trinity Church, £12.50 in adv, £15 on the door. Composed in only two weeks in 1915, when the world was in the grip of The Great War, Rachmaninov’s Vespers (All Night Vigil) is a deeply spiritual work based on traditional ancient Russian Orthodox chant. No Russian Orthodox Church ever has an organ because the tradition is against the use of instruments, consequently the art of unaccompanied composition and singing is of superb quality and Vespers is arguably one of the finest examples.
Mozart and Beethoven, 7.30pm, Guildford Cathedral, tickets up to £25. This concert features two great composers of the classical period. From Mozart we enjoy the sparkling energy of the ‘Figaro’ Overture, and the far from ‘solemn’ choral writing of the Vespers, which includes one of Mozart’s best-known arias, Laudate Dominum. Southern Pro Musica will be performing as part of its ‘Music for Guildford’ season and Jonathan Willcocks conducts.
Guildford Gag House, 8pm, The Back Room of The Star Inn, £10. Come down to experience a relaxed night of friendly fun, frolics and laughter with Guildford Fringe Festival. Suitable for those who enjoy watching comedy and being entertained, who, let’s face it, is pretty much everyone!
The Pearl, 8pm, The Mill Studio, £13. When impoverished Kino finds the ‘pearl of the world’ he believes his family’s life will be transformed forever. A timeless fable about the allure of wealth, the confines of class and the redemptive power of love. Dumbshow brings John Steinbeck’s novella to life with their trademark visual inventiveness and playful theatricality.
Simon Evans: Leashed, 8pm, G Live Bellerby Studio, £14. Like most men of his age and delusion, Simon Evans dreams of striking out into The Wild and slipping the burly bonds of suburbia. He remembers, inaccurately, a youth spent drifting like a Home Counties Kerouac through the great European arterial transport thoroughfares, bonding, if not with tribal herdsmen, then at least with truck drivers and occasional Foreign legionnaire deserters.
Cardinal Burns, 8pm, G Live, Adults £18.50, Students £10. British Comedy Award winning and BAFTA nominated duo Cardinal Burns are hitting the road… Following their second series on Channel 4, the duo are ready to unleash a torrent of never-before-seen characters and familiar faces from the series all over your lovely town.
Mark Ben Wilson, 8.30pm, Bar des Arts, free entry. Mark Ben Wilson combines upbeat, percussive acoustic beats with soothing vocals to create a mesmerizing sound. Expect to hear a well-crafted mixture of songs and lively instruments inspired by artists such as Fink, Jon Gomm, City and Colour as well as the likes of Ben Howard.
Smirnoff’s Big Night Out, 10am, Casino Nightclub, £8. Big Night Out is all about transforming your local venue to something spectacular- whether it’s the lasers of Ibiza or the gymnasts from the Circus. Big Night Out is famous for bringing you the biggest, most spectacular club nights across the UK with unrivalled scope and unmatched in scale, they always kick off in style.

Sunday (02.11.14)
Halloween activities, 11am & 2pm, Clandon Park, normal admission plus £2 a child. Bring the family to the beautiful and historic Clandon Park during the autumn half-term and treat the kids to some arts and crafts activities and a spooky trail around the garden estates.
Guildford Flames v Basingstoke Bison, 6pm, Guildford Spectrum, Adults £10.50, Child £5.50. The Flames are in action in the League Cup this Sunday against Bison and will be hoping to build on their 11-1 mauling of Sheffield at the Spectrum on Wednesday night. Guildford have had a pretty decent start to the season so far, but so have Basingstoke so it should be a close match-off.
The Day of The Dead, 7pm, The Boileroom, £12. Come and celebrate the Mexican holiday of The Day of The Dead with Esme Baker of The Grasshopper tattoo studio in London who will be hosting a workshop. Read the full preview HERE.
10CC, 7.30pm, G Live, tickets from £27.50. Among the most inventive and influential bands in the history of popular music, 10cc are one of the very few acts to have achieved commercial, critical and creative success in equal measure, with their current live incarnation still able to sell-out major concert halls.
