The Weekend Guide (14-16.11.14)


Each week we provide a comprehensive guide to all that is going on and The Weekend Guide this week covers the Friday evening of November 14 through to Sunday 16 November. We will endeavour to provide you with all the local information for each weekend, whether it is going for a drink, listening to some live music, going to the theatre, watching our local sports teams or anything else Guildford has to offer. Friday Night (14.11.14)
Los Endos: Ultimate Genesis, 7.30pm, The Electric Theatre, £17. Don’t miss this opportunity to see and hear all the drama and excitement of a Genesis gig from the 70s and 80s. Under a sweeping and dramatic light show reminiscent of the era, the intricate and powerful music of Genesis is recreated with amazing accuracy with over two and a half hours of music. Local lad Jack Lipinski will enthral you with his uncanny vocal performance – is it Collins or is it Gabriel?
Classics by Candlelight, 7.30pm, G Live, tickets from £29.50. A selection of the finest classics performed in an evocative candle-lit style setting featuring the Mozart Festival Orchestra in full 18th Century costume. They will be playing Mozart: Eine kleine Nachtmusik and Exsultate Jubilate, Bach: Concerto for Two Violins in D Minor, Handel: Let the Bright Seraphim, Arrival of the Queen of Sheba and Water Music Suites (excerpts), Purcell: Trumpet Suite, Charpentier: Opening of the Te Deum, Vivaldi: Summer from The Four Seasons.
Death by Fatal Murder, 7.45pm, The Stoke Pub & Pizzeria, £15. Death By Fatal Murder is a tongue in cheek murder mystery comedy set deep in 1940s English countryside, where the hapless Inspector Pratt investigates a murder at the mysterious Bagshot House. Join in for an evening full of laughs, suspense and fantastic food (included in the ticket price).
Hardeep Singh Kohli, 8pm, G Live Bellerby Studio, £13. After three critically acclaimed tours that have tantalized the tastebuds of audiences across the UK with his culinary skills and anecdotes, Hardeep has decided to step out from behind his hotplate and take to the stage with only a microphone and an evening’s worth of top class humour. This brand new show examines the pitfalls and triumphs of a pure soul searching for love…unfortunately that soul is trapped in the body of a 43-year-old, hairy, fat, brown man from Glasgow.
Wilde Without the Boy, 8pm, The Mill Studio, £13. Spend an hour with a chastened – but still hilarious – Oscar Wilde in his prison cell. See into his astonishingly brilliant mind and beautiful, bruised soul. Presented and performed by Gerard Logan, the play is suitable for ages 14 upwards.
Tomm Blackwood, 8.30pm, Bar des Arts, free entry. Tomm Blackwood is a startling vivid example of an anachronist. His unique vibration beckons self-revolution, his lengthy hair hangs down in honour of a by-gone sunshine age and the deeply soulful integrity of his music will most likely cleanse your mind of any devilish impurities.
Edele from b*witched, 9pm, Popworld Guildford, free before 10pm, £4 after. Edele Lynch of B*Witched and Celebrity Big Brother fame will be performing a live set including C’est La Vie, Rollercoaster and Blame it on the Weatherman with a chance to meet the lady herself afterwards!

Saturday (15.11.14)
Christmas Fair, 9am, Loseley House, no cost. Crafts for Christmas offers a unique opportunity to find special presents for special people, the perfect place to work your way enjoyably through your Christmas list. Pleasurable Christmas shopping, easy parking, free cloakrooms for coats and heavy shopping, wide aisles with easy access for wheelchairs and pushchairs and coffee shops.
Dinosaur Zoo, 11am, 2pm & 4.30pm, The Yvonne Arnaud Theatre, £17. Direct from the West End, Dinosaur Zoo brings these awesome prehistoric creatures to the stage as you’ve never seen them before! From cute baby dinos to teeth-gnashing giants, observe and interact with extraordinary life-like dinosaurs in this imaginative and hilarious live show. But watch out- not all of these ravenous reptiles are as tame as they seem!
An afternoon with Delphiniums, 1pm, RHS Wisley, normal garden costs apply. The Delphinium Society offers practical advice on these much loved plants for beginners and experts alike so head on down to RHS Wisley this Saturday afternoon.
Guildford City FC v Hartley Wintney, 3pm, Guildford Spectrum, Adults £8, Children £4. Guildford City have had a recent resurgence in form and will be looking to get a much needed 3 points against a Hartley Wintney side on Saturday. Hartley Wintney currently sit in seventh place in the league on double the points of City, but the home team have now won three of their last four games, all of which were away from the Spectrum.
Aldershot Town FC v Nuneaton FC, 3pm, Electrical Services Stadium, Adult seating/standing £19/17, Juniors seating standing £7/£5. Aldershot Town carried their excellent form from the draw at Portsmouth into their midweek league fixture, comfortably defeating Kidderminster Harriers. The victory lifts the Shots to 13th in the Conference table, with struggling Nuneaton Town visiting the Electrical Services Stadium this weekend.
Guildford Lightning v Slough Phantoms, 6.30pm, Guildford Spectrum, free entry. On Saturday 15 November, the Guildford Lightning face Slough Phantoms on Spectrum Ice for their 3rd game of the new season, hoping to make it 3 wins in a row. A great chance to go see some quality ice hockey in Guildford and completely for free!
Surrey United v Worcester Wolves, 7pm, Surrey Sports Park, Adults £10, Children £5. Jack Majewski wants his Surrey United team to iron the mistakes when they host Worcester Wolves on Saturday. United ran Wolves close in their previous meeting, eventually losing out 82-68 as Paul James’s side found another level in the fourth quarter.
Bach in B Minor – Vivace Chorus, 7.30pm, Guildford Cathedral, tickets from £12-£26, Students and children £5. When lovers of choral music muse over their Desert Island Discs selection, the Mass in B minor by J S Bach – arguably the greatest choral work ever written – often features on the list. Join Vivace Chorus to discover why, and enjoy the glories, the insights, the beauty and the exhilaration of this powerfully moving and uplifting work.
Glories of The Baroque, 7.30pm, Holy Trinity Church, £8. The University Chamber Choir is joined by the Chamber Orchestra to perform two of the great masterpieces of Baroque repertoire, Bach’s Cantata O ewiges Feuer – a joyful meditation on divine love – and Handel’s Utrecht Te Deum, composed to celebrate the end of the War of the Spanish Succession.
Surrey Mozart Players, 7.30pm, The Electric Theatre, Adults £17, U16s £8.50. Surrey Mozart Players present a concert taking the events of 1914 – 1918 as its theme. Peter Aisher, sings Vaughan Williams’ evocative setting of Housman’s ‘On Wenlock Edge’ alongside Ravel’s ‘Le Tombeau de Couperin’, written in memory of friends who died in the Great War, ‘The Banks of Green Willow’ by the fine English composer George Butterworth who died in the Battle of the Somme in 1916, and Haydn’s extraordinary ‘Trauer’ symphony.
Sheelanagig, 7.30pm, The Boileroom, £10. Sheelanagig deliver intricate, rhythmically complex arrangements of original and traditional works in a Balkan style. Formed in early 2005 the band had an instant chemistry, gained a considerable following and quickly earned a reputation for their exhilarating and intense live performances. This group of incredible players force you to dance your socks off and have a great time.

Voyage with Sinbad to medieval Baghdad: Tchaikovsky’s beloved 1st Piano Concerto meets Rimsky-Korsakov’s dazzling, colourful orchestration of the famous story-telling Queen. A thrilling tale of adventure, jealousy, redemption and the invention of the cliff-hanger… a Russian Evening of Arabian Nights!

Dr Phil Hammond, 8pm, The Yvonne Arnaud Theatre, £19.50. Highly subversive and tinged with politics, Dr Phil sees healthcare as a series of games to play and win before the NHS is sold off and we’re left to rot in the corner. After ninety minutes of madness, you’ll never look at your doctor, or the NHS, in quite the same way again.

Walk from Brockham, 10am, The Royal Oak, no cost. Guildford Rambling Club will meet by the Royal Oak in Brockham at 10am for a 10 mile walk with the option to drop out after 5.5 miles. The walk includes a picnic lunch on the green or a pub stop.
The Muscle Acre ‘Mud Slog’, 11am, Wood Street Village, day ticket £41.50-£46.50. Fields of fun, mud glorious mud, water features, hills and of course plenty of obstacles to overcome. If you’re after a new challenge then look no further than the Muscle Acre 5km and 10km runs. For fun, for fitness, for friendship … for the hell of it!
Joseph Spooner and Catherine Summerhayes, 3pm, Guildford United Reformed Church, £12. The Guildford United Reformed Church Music Society was formed in 1992 to present live music of a high standard and to make it more widely available. Besides engaging well-established artists, they take much pleasure in encouraging the many talented young musicians of today, wishing to foster the love of, and the interest in, music among children.
Erasure, 7pm, G Live, £35. Formed nearly 30 years ago, the award-winning song writing duo of Vince Clarke and Andy Bell unleashed on the nation a succession of both influential and chart-topping pop anthems of the ‘80s, ‘90s through to today. To coincide with the release of their new album in September, Erasure (Vince Clarke and Andy Bell) will be coming to G Live as part of their new The Violet Flame tour.
Nine Below Zero, 7pm, The Boileroom, £15. Nine Below Zero celebrate their 35th year with a special anniversary tour, featuring the original classic line up of Dennis Greaves, Mark Feltham, Mickey Burkey and Brian Bethell. Head down to The Boileroom on Sunday evening for the perfect end to the weekend.
