University of Surrey Opens New £1.8M Sports Pitches

The University of Surrey has opened a new terrace of grass sports pitches at Surrey Sports Park after 18 months of development.

The new terrace represents a £1.8million investment in sports facilities for University of Surrey students and local community teams, featuring one 11-a-side football pitch and two rugby pitches.

Alongside students and local teams, the pitches will also be used by the RFU Women Sevens squad, which are based at the Park, and play host to Italy and Ireland during their England 2015 Rugby World Cup training camps this autumn.

The development of world-class grass sports surfaces includes a fully computerised irrigation system, which can be run remotely via an iPhone or iPad app.

Professor Sir Christopher Snowden, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Surrey, said: “We have made significant investments in recent years to ensure that our campus and sporting facilities are of a world-class standard.

“As well as for our students, Surrey Sports Park is open for local residents to enjoy. With a new terrace of sports pitches, I hope to see many more members of the community making use of our state-of-the-art facilities.”
