Weekend Guide 31/1 – 1/2

guildford-jan-febCan’t believe this weekend sees the transition from January to February? Take your mind off it with one of the events in our weekend guide.

On Saturday, Voodoo Stripe, a 3 piece blues/rock band, will be playing at the Keystone in Guildford in a charity fundraiser for the Halow Project. The Halow Project is a charity creates opportunities and supports young people aged 16-35 with a learning disability so they can lead independent lives. Join like minded rockers and charity supporters at the Keystone on the Portsmouth Road in Guildford. Entry is only £5 and the kitchen is open all evening. The music starts at 9pm.

For those after a more relaxed and sedate evening the Johann Strauss Gala comes to the G Live. The show brings glitz and glamour to Guildford with great classical music with favourites such as The Blue Danube and Emperor Waltz combined with billowing ball gowns. More information at www.glive.co.uk

At The Boileroom, Independent Venue Week comes to a conclusion with two gigs this weekend. On Saturday Jamie Lenman will be playing an acoustic set. Jamie was previously with underground heroes Reuben and this gig follows a year touring his debut solo album Muscle Memory.

On Sunday, JP Cooper takes to the stage after two years on the road building a fanbase including Radio 1′s Huw Stephens. His debut EP reached No. 5 on the iTunes Singer/Songwriter chart and this is a change to enter his world of romanticism and heartache. Also appearing are Andy Ruddy and Tom Gatens.

More information on these gigs plus booking information can be found at www.theboileroom.net

At the Bar des Arts there’s a different kind of music. The Tzigauners specialise in Manouche or gypsy jazz music, blending elements of traditional Parisian, swing and contemporary jazz styles. Entry is FREE.

At the Yvonne Arnaud are the final performances of Roundelay. Roundelay is made up of five related short plays which can be told in any order with shared stories and overlapping narrative with some acting as sequels or prequels to others. As there are 120 different possible orders it’s something worth going to even for a second time as each evening’s performance is different. Tickets and more information at http://www.yvonne-arnaud.co.uk/

Finally, do you have a wedding coming up and are you short of ideas? The Surrey Wedding Show is at G Live on Sunday with ideas for everything from photographers to stylists and a catwalk display of wedding gowns. Entry is free but tickets must be reserved by calling 0844 7701 797
